Statement of Purpose
The mission of Access Sonoma County is to explore‚ develop and offer resources to make the Alcoholics Anonymous message and participation in our program available to everyone who reaches out for it.
There are no “special needs” in AA! We all need to hear and carry the message‚ attend meetings and work the steps‚ but for some‚ there are significant barriers. Some members are homebound or can’t drive at night; others have impaired hearing‚ vision‚ learning‚ reading or information processing abilities‚ and still others use wheelchairs or have other mobility impairment. Language difficulties or lack of childcare can seriously impact the ability to maintain sobriety. Our goal is to raise awareness of these barriers and provide information and tools so that home groups can respond to them in the spirit of the Responsibility Statement: “When anyone‚ anywhere‚ reaches out for help‚ I want the hand of AA always to be there. And for that‚ I am responsible.”
Current ASC Resources
- A flyer listing meetings that provide childcare or welcome children at meetings‚ as well as meetings that do not welcome children. Useful to parents lacking child-care resources as well as to members who wish to attend meetings that do not have children present.
- CDs of the “Big Book” to lend to members with vision or reading problems; Braille copies of the Big Book and 12&12.
- A Voice from Home: Visitors to Sonoma County (or local members) can be referred to members fluent in languages other than English and Spanish.
- Detailed information for wheelchair users which provides‚ for example‚ information about bathrooms.

What positions are available?
We believe that all alcoholics who wish to recover should have equal access to the miracles available through the 12 Steps. To this end‚ we seek to identify barriers‚ and we welcome suggestions for removing them. The participation of AA members and groups is vital‚ and we welcome new committee members‚ whether or not they have access issues themselves.
